Due giovani studenti dell’Università di Huddersfield, Gareth Humphreys e Elliott Whiteley, hanno presentato come progetto di fine anno un concept rivoluzionario per il wc del futuro: compatto e pieghevole, Iota – questo il nome del water – consente di risparmiare spazio e acqua.
Il video (realizzato da EG Visual) mostra il suo funzionamento e l’installazione. Le immagini invece illustrano il wc dalle diverse angolazioni e dimostrano la differenza di ingombro tra Iota e un water tradizionale.
Effettivamente il problema dello spazio è sempre più sentito ed è il motivo per cui il progetto mi ha incuriosita. Quando è ripiegato su se stesso, Iota occupa pochissimo spazio. Non so se questo poi si traduca in scomodità, a vederlo sembra abbia una seduta un po’ piccolina.
Resto un po’ scettica in merito alla facilità di pulizia e all’igienicità del sanitario ma è pur sempre un wc senza brida, quindi il suo design, unito al sistema di lavaggio che attiva il risciacquo anche del bordo dovrebbe assicurare un’ottima pulizia. Dal video si vede che l’acqua fuoriesce in due punti e con la potenza necessaria per ripulire accuratamente tutto il wc.
Lo trovo un concept interessante, e pare sia in fase di brevetto. Chissà se un giorno verrà prodotto sul serio!
Che poi… questa immagine mostra la differenza tra Iota e un wc con cassetta esterna, quindi bisognerebbe capire qual è la differenza con un wc a filo parete visto che oggi è la tipologia più diffusa.
The folding toilet “Iota”: space- and water saving
The “folding toilet” is the final year project by two Huddersfield University students, Gareth Humphreys and Elliott Whitely. They have invented a revolutionary concept for the toilet of the future: Iota, a folding wc that saves space and water (they claim the reduction of water consumption by over 50%).
The video above shows installation and functionality of Iota, while the pictures show the toilet from different sides and the difference between a traditional toilet and this new concept.
When closed, this toilet reduces its size and becomes a great solution for small bathrooms. And this is why I find it so interesting! The space is becoming one of the biggest problems when designing home interiors, so a toilet like this could be useful in some cases. From the other hand, I am not able to understand if its size could be not so ergonomic and comfortable.
I am a little bit sceptical about the cleaning system, but as it is a rimless toilet it should be easy to clean. Watching the video I can see a flushing system with two different water jets to keep the bowl clean. The rotation of the bowl is smooth and accurate thanks to an interior frame holding it in place.
I find this project very interesting and I really hope one day someone will start with the industrial production. Great job guys!
